"Our fireworks display is by far the best in the area. I look forward to it every year. I also have volunteered along with my daughter to walk around in the parks collecting donations for the show. Keep up the awesome job--and count on my daughter and me to help with getting donations."

The Olean Area Fireworks program 2008 is a combined effort of the members of the City of Olean Firefighter's Local 1796 and the staff of WMXO/WOEN Radio Station. The gates to Bradners Stadium will open at 6pm and all are invited to enter into the stadium to watch the show. We will have live entertainment playing from 6pm until dusk. There will be a NO BICYCLES GIVEN AWAY THIS YEAR! Instead Mix 101.5 has offered to give away prize packs. Please check back for more information! There will also be a 50/50 drawing held INSIDE the stadium. The event sponsors sanction no other raffles!

NO ALCOHOL will be allowed inside the stadium and coolers and bags will be subject to search for the safety of the public. For an alcohol and drug free night of entertainment, inside the stadium is where you want to be. Members of the Police and Fire Department would like to remind the publice that possession of Fireworks is illegal in New York State and that the law will be enforced!

History

City of Olean Firefighters took over the local fireworks program in 2001. Prior to that, the Dempsey Club (City of Olean Police Department) ran the fireworks. The fireworks have been held in Bradner Stadium since the early 1960’s. The actual fireworks program, not just the ground displays, were shot inside the stadium. However, due to the rising safety issues, the fireworks are now being shot from Forness Park. The ground displays are still shot inside the stadium, but at a safe distance away from the spectators. Young Fireworks of Rochester, New York, now shoot our shows. A wide range of shells are shot in our programs. The shells range from 1” shells all the way up to 10” shells. The 10” shells are the largest shell that can be shot safely in our area.

*Fireworks Notice*

If you choose to celebrate with your own fireworks please remember that New York State bans all consumer fireworks. Fireworks may appear to be harmless, but their effects can be deadly. Every year, thousands of people suffer serious injuries and numerous fires are caused by the use of illegal fireworks - these injuries and fires that can, and should be prevented.

Nearly two thirds of fireworks-related injurires are casued by backyard, "Class C" fireworks such as firecrackers, bottle rockets and sparklers. However, the most severe injuries are typically caused by powerful "Class B" fireworks. According to section 270 of the State Penal Law, all "Class B & C: fireworks are illegal in New York State and the Federal Hazardous Substance Act, prohibits sale of the more dangerous types to the public to avoid injury and property damage. Among these banned products are large, reloadable mortar shells, cherry bombs, aerial bombs, M-80's and large firecrackers with more than 2 grains of powder. Likewise, all mail order kits to construct fireworks are strictly prohibited.

Our Independence Day is a great reason for celebration, but we all need to remember that consumer fireworks in New York State are banned. We urge everyone to celebrate safely. Don't break the law and put you or your loved ones at unnecessary risk by playing with fireworks. Attending the Olean Firefighters Local 1796 public fireworks display is a great way to honor our tradition of Independence and celebrate the anniversary of our nation's birth.

The following are some safety precautions to take while celebrating the Fourth of July.

 - Make sure that any fireworks display you plan on attending is a legitimate one. Legitimate firework events will have proper authorities and medical staff in attendance.

 - NEVER take pets to a firework display. Animals can become spooked very easily by the loud noises fireworks make.

 - Remember the bug spray. Mosquitoes and other insects are usually in masses this time of year!
